Liberty Light

solar powered address signA Solar powered address sign can be placed on any surface and mounting it shouldn’t be a problem at all. As long as you place the address sign in an area exposed to the sun the solar light will work perfectly. Some more expensive models allow installation even in shaded sunlight. This is made possible thanks to the high quality of the solar cells installed on such products. The high output of the solar cells compensates the lack of direct sunshine.
Solar address signs operate like almost all solar lights. The main components forming the light are the solar panel or solar cell, the batteries, the lighting source and the photo-cell.

Solar Panel
During daylight, the solar panel collects the solar energy and recharges the batteries located inside the solar powered address sign. On most solar address signs the solar panel is built-in, but on some it can be detached so you can place it at a distance from the address sign; this can be practical when there is not enough sunlight where your house number is installed. One last thing about the solar panel is that it needs to be cleaned from time to time.

Batteries
Usually NiCad or NiMh AA batteries are utilized and they are already installed when you buy the light. For the batteries of your solar powered address sign to be fully operational, you will need to let them charge for a couple of days before the first use. To do so, just switch-off the light so it doesn’t automatically start at night and make sure the solar cells are receiving enough sunshine. This will insure a full charge of the batteries. The batteries are probably the only items you will need to change during the life-time of the solar light. They will need to be replaced every year or two.

Light Source
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are the light source of choice for solar lighting. This is mainly due to the high luminosity generated by extra bright LEDs, low power consumption and longevity. Unlike regular light bulbs, you will probably never need to replace the LEDs of your solar address sign. LEDs come in different colors.

Photo-cell
Its role is to trigger-on the lights of the solar address sign when night begins to fall and to switch-off at dawn. Photo-cells also known as photo resistors operate like a switch. The change of ambient luminosity triggers the solar powered address sign OFF or ON. More on outdoor solar lights
